Operations Manager

The Operations Manager will be responsible to ensure smooth operation of various processes that contribute to the production of goods and services of the organization. Operations Managers plan, direct and coordinate the operations of an organization. The Operations Manager is responsible for ensuring and improving the performance, productivity, efficiency and profitability of departmental and organizational operations through the provision of effective methods and strategies. The Operations Manager will also have a lot of liaising with other team members, including interacting with managers of different areas of the organization, presenting findings to stakeholders and higher management as well as training and supervising new employees and tracking and measuring staff performance. It is the Operations Manager's job to make sure an organisation is running as well as it possibly can, with a smooth efficient service that meets the expectations and needs of customers and clients. Working with the management team, the position also contributes to the development and implementation of organizational strategies, policies and practices.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the operations of the manufacturing establishment: production, distribution, maintenance, inventory, shipping and warehousing
  • Conduct assessments and propose improvements to methods, systems and procedures in areas such as operations, human resources, records management and communications
  • Oversee the operational budget; Cost of Goods: raw material, labour, burden, shipping, expense items, packaging, materials, and maintenance
  • Provide leadership to the operations department; conveying company vision and strategies while assuring all departments are moving forward in the proper direction
  • Conduct quality audits and develop quality management and quality assurance standards for GMP Regulations and Health Canada's standards
  • Develop and implement plans to efficiently use materials, labour and equipment to meet production targets
  • Develop production schedules and maintain an inventory of raw materials and finished products
  • Meet regularly with other production and packaging operators, warehouse, production supervisors and purchasing and inventory clerks to co-ordinate activities between warehouses and production floors
  • Co-ordinate and monitor the movement of parts, supplies and materials within an establishment and ensure that supplies, materials and products are shipped and received on schedule
  • Prepare and maintain various reports on the progress of work, materials used, rates of production and other production information, using manual or computerized systems
  • Train workers in job duties, safety procedures and company policies
  • Co-ordinate, assign and review the work of clerks engaged in the following duties: shipping, receiving, storing, distributing and maintaining inventories of materials, parts and products; processing purchasing transactions; co-ordinating production work; and other related activities
  • Plan, organize and oversee operational logistics of the organization, establish work schedules and procedures, resolve work-related issues, prepare and submit progress and other reports and co-ordinate activities with other supply-chain work units or departments
  • Resolve work problems and recommend measures to improve productivity and product quality
  • Recommend personnel actions such as hiring's and promotions
  • Conduct assessments and propose improvements to methods, systems and procedures in areas such as operations, human resources, records management and communications
  • Establishes the overall vision and direction for the implementation of the internal operations
  • Develop and implement new business strategies for creating or improving processes and procedures to improve corporate performance
  • Monitor departmental performance against goals to ensure that progress is being made, and that corrective action is taken if necessary
  • Meet regularly with department heads/business unit leaders; facilitate resolution of issues/problems between business units and/or departments
  • Manage the morale in the department by setting and demonstrating a strong business ethic for dealing with employees, suppliers and customers
  • Enhance and develop policies, procedures and service systems to meet the goals of the department
  • Monitor financial performance to ensure the department is meeting or exceeding budgetary commitment
  • Analyze and report regularly on the department's key performance indicators and industry trends
  • Handle Customer enquiries and complaints which are escalated from the departments
  • Update work orders with appropriate information to provide information more quickly and easily to Customers
  • Examines reports (e.​g.​, inventory, sales and daily reports) to determine the operational activities of the company and ensure optimum performance.​
  • Write, review and train on standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Ensure that all employees adhere to company policies and procedures
  • Employ a continuous improvement mindset. Investigate existing systems and procedures and recommend improvements where necessary, resulting in a more efficient and cost-effective operation
  • As part of our automation strategy, research, investigate, and introduce new or emerging technologies that can maximize efficiencies and productivity while maintaining quality standards

Employment Requirements:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in operations management, food related sciences or business administration
  • Minimum of five years of management and/or supervisory experience in the food and/or natural products manufacturing industry
  • Computer skills - Excellent MS Office Skills (One Drive, Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Experience with an ERP use and/or implementation would be considered an asset
  • Effective leadership skills, with a strong focus on operations and business processes
  • Able to identify key issues; creatively and strategically overcome internal challenges or obstacles
  • A clear and solid understanding of personnel policies, practices, and procedures and other operational issues faced by the organization
  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
  • High level of integrity, confidentially, and accountability
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills
  • Willingness and proven ability to make decisions and hold people accountable for their performance
  • Able to delegate responsibilities effectively
  • Ability to write and execute a strategic plan
